  1. Hi!

I heard about your website from a friend of mine and I find your idea very interesting!

I have a 10 year old kid and I´d like to introduce him to skateboarding (I was myself a skateboarder loooong time ago!) while I can get fit too... We live in Brooklyn but would love to do some miles at the Park every weekend, do you do coaching weekends too? How´s longboard different from a traditional board? easier to start for a kid?... I´d love to introduce my kid to a healthy and fun sport. This sounds like one. Thank you.

  2. Hello Brad and Son,

I welcome you to the new era of US Speed SkateBoarding. Formalized point to point training and racing on skateboards. Your son happens to be the perfect age for an introduction to endurance athletics. You as well, are at an age where an endurance balance sport as health and wellness lifestyle would be very beneficial and exciting.

It would be my pleasure to meet with you both to get acquainted and to discuss how working with me might best be arranged.
Please email me or call to arrange. I'd be happy to skate or ride my folding bike over to Brooklyn to meet with you both on any week end that is mutually suitable.

  4. Hey. This looks like fun, but is it dangerous?
What's the best and easiest way to start?

  5. Welcome Toni,

Life got dangerous the minute you were born. Considering this, with proper preparation and well thought out protocols, training in Central Park is as safe as riding a bicycle, inline skating or roller skate skiing, all endurance sports presently being practiced in the park today. Longboarding for fitness requires specificity in regards to execution. So a bit of instruction or coaching helps quite a bit. The principles are the same and not tricky. Once you acquire them it is like riding a bicycle, you will not forget them, although balance does require maintenance.

From my experience in endurance longboarding, acquiring the proper skills to become an expert rider may take as little as six month to as long as three years. This is approximately the same duration of time it requires to be a proficient cyclist for instance.

Regarding endurance, these principles remain the same clear across the sports spectrum. Coaching and good education by way of books is certainly the best way to learn this. The body adapts to the load slowly.. but it will adapt no matter what condition you are in now.

If you live near the park you may walk over. Otherwise a simple train ride can leave you at any corner entrance. Once in the park, there is a joggers lane which I will ask that every one always respect. Runners travel clock wise BTW. Next to the joggers lane is a bike lane. This lane travels counter clockwise with the flow of vehicle traffic. Please respect these rules at all times.

Further more, the park is closed to traffic many hour of the day. The schedule varies. More so in summer.

Considering these facts, longboaring in Central Park is as safe a place as you could be.

I encourage beginners to start there and after mastery of intermediate skills, they might begin to consider commuting which has a different set of safety protocols.

Please always wear a helmet and all protective gear and hydrate well before during and after all work outs. Urinating clear with volume is indicative of complete hydration.

Danger is a part of life and danger management is a healthy skill to control. Remaining sedentary has it's own set of dangers. We all set our own personal thresholds.

I ride all over the city and I never fear even for an instant for my safety. Transportation Alternatives is a sensational organization and they have brought so much safety by way of bike lanes and more friendly pedestrian walk ways, it is truly inspiring and impressive. I encourage you to review their website for safety tips as well.

I hope my answers have been helpful.

Global Rolling.. it's a nice life style.

    Cheers

  6. Hello,

I live in Miami. Do you have advice for someone getting into this sport. There are no hills here.

Are there special ways to train?

Do you charge for training programs if I am not in NY?

    Thank you.

  7. Welcome Carlos,

Global Rolling is a nice lifestyle no matter the terrain. Certainly you can longboard for fitness in Miami. The fact is longboarding for endurance and fitness is all about pushing the board, not going down hills. When I skate I am always pushing with both legs and never stopping. Naturally when I come upon a hill there will be a mild decent on the other side, but very often and especially in Central Park the hills are so low that I push most of them down as well or take them all on one leg for good isometric work. Once the body has adapted though, up hills are advisable to build strength. Here in NYC we have 45-60 minute uphills not to far off. But as I said that is much more advanced in terms of the endurance your body may be ready to accept. periodization takes years but measurable results are immediate and gratifying. The biggest failures occur when to much is done to fast and that is the case no matter what your age. Miami being flat is a perfect place to long distance push.

Are you a roller skater, skateboarder or skier from the past? If so, this helps but it's not a problem beginning with no balance sport experience.

Longboarding combines one legged balance and strength + endurance in a way unlike any other in that the action is asymmetrically repetitious during extended intervals 8-30 push leg cadence-switch. In other words, you push with only one leg at a time then switch over, but during the pushing there is full body balance required of the stationary leg. The support leg literally becomes part of the machine below you. It becomes like a seat atop a bicycle. Consequently longboarding produces more balance ability then the sports I mentioned above. Of course balance is the most over looked aspect of full body fitness so gaining balance as you work your aerobic and strength systems is a massive plus.

My advice to you is to please call and discuss this further since there is to much to explain over this portal to get you going safely. Most of my coaching is done in NYC but if we can hash out the basics on a land line then we may be able to work with you. There is no cost for the initial interview. Not all coaches are right for every client and once we can get to know one another we can see if I am the right coach for you.
